About Us
Our Origins
Cambridgeshire RFU was founded in 1948 and joined Eastern Counties in 1952. Since that time it has grown from four founding members to the current arrangements with member clubs across the whole county and affiliated clubs from neighbouring areas that sit outside the RFU-defined boundaries of Eastern Counties.
The role of the County Union is to promote the playing of rugby union in the area. It does this by organising competitions between clubs at both adult and youth level, by the arrangement of festivals for mini-rugby teams, liaising with other counties and with local schools, colleges and universities, and fielding Cambridgeshire representative sides for men, women, men’s under 20s, boys u18 and u17s. Other representative sides in the past have included younger boys’ teams but those are no longer authorised by the RFU. It is hoped that the continued growth of the women’s game will see sufficient numbers playing to make further representative sides feasible.
Our History
Teams
Our men, women and under 20s sides participate in annual Tri-Counties tournaments with our colleagues in Norfolk and Suffolk with all three sides having
had notable success in recent years.
Member Clubs
Current member clubs of the county include: Cambridge, Cantabrigian, Cottenham
Renegades, Ely, Haverhill, March, Mildenhall Red Lodge, Newmarket, Saffron Walden, Shelford, Wendens Ambo and Wisbech. Former members, no longer playing but not to be forgotten, include Cambourne Exiles, Old Perseans and Sawston.
Other Clubs
We also have affiliated clubs who join in some of our activities and are highly valued contributors to county teams – although they are not member clubs of Eastern
Counties. These include: Deepings, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Royston, St Ives, St Neots and Thorney.
The County Union
Co-operation
The County Union co-operates closely with Eastern Counties and with the RFU to ensure that rugby activities in Cambridgeshire clubs are well managed and safely organised.
Safety
The County has an appointed Safeguarding Officer and a Rugbysafe lead (which is about first aid support and health and safety).
Representation
The County has representatives for
Discipline, Club Development, Youth and Mini Rugby leads, teams of coaches for all squads and a representative on the Eastern Counties Management Committee.
